The NYSC (Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development) has greatly succeeded in empowering Corps members with the required skills to thrive and stay relevant in today’s society, whereby, boosting their chance of success in the labor market.
As for me, I don’t know where I would be if not for my die minute encounter with creative writing SAED on camp. I was a member of the Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS), which made it kind of difficult for me to participate in other camp programs. There was this very day we had series of lectures on security and safety tips, I was about packing the OBS instruments used for the lectures, a tall dark young man approached me and introduced himself as the SAED trainer of Creative Writing which he then proceeded to inquire how one of his member articles can be aired by the OBS. I immediately used the opportunity to join this SAED which I am very grateful for that decision I made.
I studied Mass Communication in school but deep down in me, I knew I needed more which made me incomplete professionally; after that extra-ordinary encounter on camp my life has never remained the same. Immediately we got out of camp my article was published by Daily Trust Newspaper the following month, a feat I have never achieved. I think if not for SAED I wouldn’t have realized my potential as a writer. SAED gave me the path to channel my natural and professional skills and the foundation to build my potentials on.
A brief chat with Asweje Ireti Bunmi a Corps member participating in fashion designing SAED, had these to say, “I can boldly say I can stand independently and be established on my own without relying on government and others”. She also said taking fashion designing as her SAED has increased her level of creativity adding that earning per day is very much preferable to her than a monthly salary which comes with a lot of stress. She however urged all Corps members to go for it stating that apart from the income it gives you, it also commands the well-deserved respect from the society as an independent fellow.
