Real Talk with Blessing Ajagbe Oyinkansola
How I wish there was a guide book that would tell about life after school. I don’t know if there actually is one, I’ve not laid my hands on any. It’s only been a few months since I graduated from Uni and honestly life since then has not been so easy. Starting my NYSC to trying to find my place in this world. For someone like me who wants to make a name for herself, I cannot just sit down and watch life unfold. I knew I wanted to be a Creative Writer and a Film maker, these wouldnt just happen. I have to put in the work like furthering my education as I have little or no knowledge about filmmaking. Also, different business ideas have been flooding my mind and I’m trying to be careful with the idea I put into work.
There was a time I had an idea to start an online grocery shop. The idea was to make grocery shopping easier for people by ordering and having their items delivered to their door step. When I told my sister about the idea which I was so eager about, she gave me reasons why the business would not thrive in a place like Ilorin. Who in Ilorin would want to use a grocery shop online when they can go themselves to Oja tuntun, Ipata, Yoruba road or even the famous Shoprite? Bad idea alert!
The thing is, once you’re done with school, the thought that constantly comes to your mind is how to make money if you don’t have a business or handwork/skills. It was after Uni I realized the importance of entrepreneurship. Honestly, I wish I took it more seriously while I was in school. Thankfully, it’s not too late and I’m presently working on it. I’m learning video editing and will still learn a few things after that.
As a fresh graduate, you shouldn’t:
Nurse the mentality that you are done with learning: Learning is a continuous process. Even if you didn’t take entrepreneurship serious like me while in school, it’s not too late to learn something new. Everyone will not have the opportunity to get a white collar job after Youth Service, and who knows whether the handwork you learnt will eventually announce you to the world.
Be specific and dynamic on the idea to bring to life:
Like I have constantly stated, different ideas will keep coming. Be particular about one you should bring to life so you don’t end up wasting your time, money, and all efforts will end up in vain. Don’t be too proud to seek advice from people. The only thing is, be careful about people you meet for advice. Not everyone is interested in your progress.
Seek God for direction: This is very important and most people don’t realize it. They think they can make decisions for themselves and most times end up in an epic failure. He is the one that plans out our life that's why you have to work in line with His will or else you’ll keep rolling in circles.
Dear fresh graduate, have it at the back of your mind that there is no limit to what you can do. Don’t put yourself or allow society put you in a box. Think outside the box
