    AFTER SERVICE WHAT NEXT?

    Tolorunse Moyosoreoluwa Joseph

Just few months ago another batch of the nation’s youth service Corps signed out from the one-year compulsory scheme and a new batch was received immediately.
The labour market is becoming more complex and difficult so it’s high time all Corps members start taking this one-year training as an opportunity to prepare themselves for the post NYSC life.
However, the NYSC scheme has made life so easy for each and every Corps member by making available bunch of courses like; HRM, CRM, CICPM, HSE, QAQC etc. readily at their disposal at a subsidized rate which makes it easy for every Corps member to afford.
Also, the importance of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) can never be over emphasized as many Corps members fail to realize the advantage it gives them, and the liberation from the dependent class to the independent class.
My heart aches whenever I see a fellow Corps member wandering in the scheme like a lost moon in the desert and not trying to invest in himself by acquiring a skill, enhancing himself professionally or starting a small scale business. But having this mentality that there is a white collar job with a six figure salary waiting for him out there after service.
If every Corps member can take advantage of the various opportunities presented to them during service and judiciously use them, the post service life won’t be a problem even if that dream job of a hefty six figure salary and an air conditioned office is not coming at the expected time, the skill that has been acquired during service is enough to set the foot on high places by making it employers of labour and not seekers of job; and when that dream job finally arrives, the professional courses taking during service would be an added advantage for you in the competitive market.
