JT-WILLS COMMUNICATIONS CONSULT. (Public Relations Practice)
In the online world, alot of young and not too experienced Nigerians parade themselves as PR practitioner's, little do they understand the ropes of the trade and consequence of such actions.
In this brief chat with Mr. Olatunde Williams. C, C.E.O. JT-wills Communications Consult, a communications and PR expert, he shares with us how he found himself in Public Relations practice and also explains the misconception of amateurs and journalist taking up public relations (PR) jobs in Government, firms, individuals and the media.
JT-wills Communications Consult ventured into Public Relations (PR) in 2004 by virtue of Educational and Professional Qualification where I attained a Certificate and Diploma in Public Relations from the prestigious Business Education and Examinations Council (B.E.E.C) and got Chartered in the Profession at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations as an Associate Member of the Institute (ANIPR).
Who Needs A PR
First the definition of public relations: is an art and science of analyzing trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organisational leaders, implementing planned programme of action that will serve both the organisation and the public interest.
So therefore, the professional service is both for the Government, Private Firms and Individuals.
Limitations PR industry face in Nigeria? Solution.
Basically Public Relations is an important information and communication service for growth and survival of any Government parastatal/institution, private firm, group or person in respect of image and reputation management.
The challenge we face on the field of practice is the problem of amateurs and uncertified Public Relations Practitioners parading themselves as certified PR practitioners and also there is a general perception that journalist can do a PR Job since they are trained in skill writing. "permit me to emphasize that Public Relations is more than only skill writing but also encompasses image and reputation management, issues/crises management, providing adequate and global managerial counsel to management or anybody for the service on media and other stake holders".
The institute which was established under Decree 16 of the 1990's Constitution now an ACT has taking an affirmative step to recertify trained PR Professionals and has warned in other publications that if you are caught in practicing the Profession without being certified, then the law must take it's full course.
Thirdly, the fallout and the evidences are every where to see when an amateur takes the job of a PR practitioner eg journalist. that is why who ever needs a PR service should go to a Professional PR FIRM.
